How Long Has Weight Watchers Been Around – Jean Evelyn Nidetch (née Slutsky, October 12, 1923 – April 29, 2015) was an American businesswoman who founded the Weight Watchers organization.
Jean Nidetch was born on October 12, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York to David and Mae Slutsky. Jean came from a working-class family and worked as a taxi driver and manicurist. A graduate of Bedford High School for Girls, Jean’s academic pursuits led to a scholarship offer from Long Island University. Instead, he chose to play at the City College of New York, where he earned a degree in business administration.

Jean’s career began in 1942 when he left school after the death of his father. With the help of her family, Jean began working at Mullin’s furniture company, where she earned a total of $10 a week ($177 in 2022 dollars). He quickly worked for the publishing company Man O’War, where he produced cards for horseplayers. The case focused on Fiorello La Guardia’s campaign for mayor of New York on horse racing, which was harmful to the industry. Jan got a job at the Internal Review Service.
Noom Vs. Weight Watchers
After meeting Marty Nidetch on the Internal Review Service, the two were married on April 20, 1947. After a few months of marriage, the young couple moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Marty took a job as a loan manager. Marty was promoted to manager of a store in Ware, Pennsylvania, leading to the couple’s second move in less than a year.
In February 1952, the family moved to New York, where Marty took a job as a bus driver. Jean stayed home with her growing family. Although Jean chose to stay at home as a mother and homemaker, she was involved in many charities in the area, which helped her develop some of the skills she used to build Weight Watchers into a global brand.
Jean struggled with her weight throughout her life as an overweight child and young woman. Her struggle led her to the obesity clinic of the New York City Department of Health, where she was told to start a strict diet. Disappointed with her success and not being committed to the plan she was given, she chose not to return to the clinic, and the woman who ran the clinic said she had never been overweight in her life and didn’t understand the struggle.
Instead, she chose to invite six overweight women into her home, where they met weekly to talk about their struggles and discuss diet tips and advice. It established a rule that women should consult their doctors before joining a support group, a rule that Weight Watchers still follows. This support group was the beginning of what would soon become Weight Watchers, Jean started his own group in 1963.
Runs For Cookies: Weight Watchers Beyond The Scale
The brand grew by word of mouth, and what was once a small support group turned into hundreds of women seeking Jan’s advice and losing 70 pounds on the diet. To cover costs, he paid 25 cts per clitel to join his plan.
In 1973, on the 10th anniversary of Weight Watchers, Jean decided to leave the company. In 1978, the company J.D. It was sold to Heinz for $24 per share, or $71.2 million. Jean received approximately $7 million for his shares in the company, and he signed an agreement never to start another weight loss company. He became the face of the company and remained a consultant to the company.
He died on April 29, 2015 at the age of 91 at his home in Parkland, Florida. It was amazing and I’m so glad I went and did it. If it wasn’t for WW I never would have believed I could do it .”
