How To Clean A Pot That Has Been Burned
Whether you completely burn dinner or your dishes get dirtier and dirtier over time, you’ll eventually need to do a cleaning session at the sink. And for that, the sooner the better! For this reason, we have laid out five methods for testing a burnt pan
Cleaning An Instant Pot? Be Sure You’re Doing It The Right Way
In an effort to ensure this guide gives you the most accurate results, we set some parameters for this pan scrubbing test. All the pans tested were made of stainless steel and cooked in the same mixture of foods – cheese, egg and grape jelly.
If the method suggested soaking, we allowed each pan to soak for 15 min, checking at 5-min intervals and documenting when the charged debris began to lift easily. We also limited any extra “active scrubbing” to 10 minutes because honestly, who wants to scrub a pan for longer than that?!
Each method is rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with ratings based on the overall effectiveness of the cleaning process, such as how long each technique works its magic, how much extra elbow grease it takes to remove burnt-on food, and how much mess it creates. After clearing our set parameters are left in the pane
Before cleaning your dishes, test the method on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure it won’t damage the surface The methods below are intended for stainless steel cookware and not with nonstick coatings.
Signs It’s Time To Throw Out Your Pots And Pans
How it works: Fill your dirty pan with equal parts water and vinegar Bring the mixture to a boil and then add 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Remove from heat and let soak for 15 minutes Pour the liquid down your drain and then use a sponge or scouring pad to scrub away any remaining burnt bits. If the stain remains, apply a paste made of baking soda mixed with a little water and let sit for a few minutes before scrubbing again.
What happened: We had high hopes for this method because it worked well when testing the best method for cleaning a baking sheet. After only 5 minutes of soaking, we noticed some chard bits floating to the surface! However, we chose to continue soaking it for 15 minutes because there seemed to be some stubborn bits that quickly caught on. After a wash with a wash pad and 10 minutes of heavy scrubbing we were able to pick up.
A follow-up application of the burnt food baking soda paste is absolutely necessary and additional scrubbing is essential to lift the remaining debris.
How it works: Cut 2-3 lemons and arrange them in your clay pan Place the pan over medium heat and fill with enough water to cover the lemons Boil the lemon water for 5-8 minutes and then remove the pan from the heat You’ll know when the pan is ready for the final scrub when you start to see food particles floating on the surface of the water. Discard and drain the lemons Rinse in warm, clean water and use a scouring pad or brush to loosen and remove any stuck-on pieces.

What happened: This is our favorite method While we can appreciate the natural approach, it wasn’t as effective for us as other methods we tried It takes a bit of heavy duty scrubbing with hot water to make any real impact on the lips. We think some classic Dawn dish soap would be just as effective and you wouldn’t have wasted two perfect lemons in the process.
And it’s a cleaning product that you can use on a variety of surfaces around your home Made with oxalic acid, bar keeper’s vinegar is just as acidic as vinegar or lemon juice—but stronger.
How it works: Run your dirty pan under hot water and drain Then, wearing rubber gloves, rub a few tablespoons of bar keeper into your dirty pan with the remaining water. Spread the paste over the burnt residue in the pan and let it sit for 60 seconds Don’t make it too long – this stuff means business After 60 seconds, rinse the pan thoroughly with hot water and then use a sponge, brush or scouring pad to scrub away any burnt-on food. Repeat this process as needed for any stubborn stains
What: Bar Keeper is our favorite cleaning product for the whole house We had high hopes for this method and it delivered We were impressed with what we were able to remove after a quick 60 second soak and 10 minute scrub. Hard spots are completely removed with a quick follow-up application and another 2 minutes of scrubbing with a scouring pad.
Easy Ways To Clean A Burnt Cast Iron Skillet: 11 Steps
Benefits: Not only for covering up leftovers, aluminum foil is also a pretty effective cleaning tool that you probably already have in your cupboard.
How it works: Rinse your dirty pot with hot water and drain Then, sprinkle with a generous 2 tablespoons of baking soda Add a few tablespoons of hot water to your pan to make a paste with baking soda and then start scrubbing with a golf ball-sized piece of cloth. Continue scrubbing until all burnt debris is removed and then rinse with warm, soapy water to clean.
What Happened: This method gave us great results We were impressed with how much dirt the foil picked up, requiring a little touch-up with additional baking soda after the initial scrub. Ultimately, this method is like a “deluxe” version of the baking soda + vinegar method we described earlier. It works just the same but faster and more effective by adding foil for better scrubbing power
How it works: Take a dishwashing detergent tab from your container and wash your dirty pan in hot water. Then, begin gently scrubbing the pan under hot water with the dishwashing tab Scrub until all food debris is removed, and then rinse with warm water
Fantastic Ways To Clean Baked On Grease From Pans
What Happened: We can’t believe how well this method works! In less than 5 minutes we had a perfectly clean pan that required no follow-up scrubbing using the alternate method. We used Finish Powerball Deep Clean Tabs and it’s best to leave the plastic covering on the tab while scrubbing. The warm water will gently dissolve the tab as you scrub and help the tablet keep its shape instead of falling off between your fingers. The only downside to this method is that we used two whole dishwasher tablets to clean one dirty pan. Therefore, this method can be expensive However, it’s so effective, we think it’s worth the price
While all of these methods are effective at scrubbing nasties from your pan, dishwasher tablets are the undisputed winner in our opinion. While we can’t vouch for other brands of dishwasher tablets, we expect them to be equally effective at removing grease and burnt-on food.
While dishwasher tablets are our favorite standalone method, we think others are great options — especially Bar Keeper’s Friend and Aluminum Foil + Baking Soda — to use if you’re okay with spending a little extra time getting the job done. Be prepared to use some extra elbow grease
