Thanks to some internet research, I found this great article from Inspired Housewives, which has an easy, cheap and effective way to remove urine stains from mattresses.
I decided to try it myself on my daughter’s very wet mattress, with old pie stains, and the strong smell of pies. I want to see if it really works and how it works or not.
I did this urine stain removal method and immediately bought this new waterproof mattress cover so I wouldn’t have to do it again.

A few people have said that it is not suitable for mattresses, mostly foam or memory mattresses.
While I used it on a white mattress, many have used this method on colored mattresses and patterned mattresses. You want to see it to test the color fastness, but luckily you cover the mattress and sheets and never see it.
2. Pour the solution directly onto the bed and gently wipe with a cloth or carpet brush.
3. Mix the solution in a bowl, then fill it with a cloth and rub it on the mattress, making sure that every time you wipe it, you use a clean part of the cloth so that the urine does not return to the mattress.
Ways To Clean Urine Out Of A Foam Mattress
If you want to speed up the drying time, wipe your mattress with a clean cloth, add a fan or two.
I’m thinking of doing another round of the above treatment, applying vinegar and letting it air dry, or someone suggested spraying with alcohol or cheap vodka directly.
If the stain doesn’t go away after several treatments, I will buy a new bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide loses its potency over time, especially if it is left in the sun too long or the lid is left open for too long, etc. Make sure your baking soda isn’t too old either.
You can also try treating stains without urine. I’m not sure this solution works on all mattress stains (such as oil, dirt, and sweat) although others have said it has worked on other mattress stains as well.
How To Clean A Mattress, Step By Step Instructions
Many people have asked if it works with other fabrics, and I have never tried it. But, as always, you can try it on a small area. I’m not sure how it works on leather or other bedding materials, and peroxide can change the color of your fabric.
Chances are good that it will work for your carpet! Carpets and rugs are also easy to read so you win there! Just test the scene if you are worried about color speed.
It’s certainly not the end of the world if you don’t have it. You can use a dry cloth and rub the remaining baking soda on the floor and then wipe it off. Or get a simple stick vacuum or a cheap handheld vacuum.
I recommend a waterproof mattress protector. I also highly recommend the ones that are powder free as well for better health.
