How To Get Cat Urine Smell Out Of Carpet – If you have an outdoor cat, or if your yard is a lost sanctuary, you probably have cat pee odors that have built up over time. This stench can linger long after the liquid has been absorbed if you don’t treat it properly.
Urine is usually around 95% water, with the other 5% a varied chemical cocktail, including proteins, uric acid, salts, minerals, ammonia and more.

When cat urine dries, the organic compound called urea in it is broken down by bacteria, causing it to smell like ammonia. As the urine continues to break down, it releases thiols that make the bad smell stronger. Uric acid is an additional component that is not soluble in water and binds tightly to any surface it touches.
How To Get Cat Pee Out Of Clothes, Couches, Towels, Rugs, And Carpet
To get rid of the smell of cat urine outside, you need to eliminate the smell of urine, not just cover it up.
While baking soda, white vinegar, soap, and hydrogen peroxide can temporarily neutralize odors, a humid day can cause the uric acid to recrystallize and release the unpleasant odor into the outdoor area again. Other home remedies, such as lime, can be dangerous to your family and your cat’s health.
Both orange peels and cayenne pepper are commonly used to deter cats from venturing into yards, but they do nothing to eliminate cat odors. Also, cayenne pepper can be a harmful irritant to cats.
To get rid of outdoor cat urine odor, use an enzyme-based cleaner with live bacteria to break down and eliminate the source of strong odors. Enzymes break down uric acid into gases, and through natural drying, the gases evaporate. Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator uses safe and natural bacterial microbes that eliminate odors at the source.

There’s nothing like the smell of cat pee on your carpet to really save the day. Although we don’t want to admit it, life with pets leads to a few messes here and there. Cat urine can be such a difficult smell to get rid of, especially on carpet. It also seems that once your cat has an accident on the carpet, that spot will become a frequent location for future accidents if left untreated.
My cat has had several accidents over the years. I have tried several methods to remove odors and germs! From specialty products sold in pet stores to natural remedies. We had a variety of results as you can imagine. It turns out that the products that work best require the most work. Then one day an idea came to me and I tried it… Glad it worked! I can’t wait to share this simple DIY solution to pet odors that not only kills bacteria and germs, but also smells great!
Best of all, this is a DIY solution to pet odors like cat pee that will only cost you $2 to create. You may already have all the supplies on hand to fix a pet accident quickly and easily.
The first step to take when your pet has an accident is to clean up as much urine as possible with paper towels. Clean as soon as possible until the paper towel is dry after cleaning. This will make the job much easier.
The Chemistry Of Cats: Allergies, Catnip And Urine
If you have a newspaper lying around, place it over the area where the accident happened. The newspaper will absorb some of the smell.
Just spray this over the area where the accident happened. Spray the area until it is damp.
And there it is. A simple cat urine remover that is very easy to make and use. The mouthwash will kill the bacteria and leave a pleasant smell. As you can see, I used peppermint because that’s what the local Dollar Tree had in stock. We currently have a rescue kitten staying at our house and the Bengal is not too happy about it! First he peed on the cat’s bed. Then he “marked” the cardboard box in which the kitten had been playing. Finally, he moved on to spraying where the kitten could smell. I absolutely cannot stand the smell of cat urine, so I did my best to clean up this whole mess. I have literally tried everything to get rid of the cat smell in my house.
First I started cleaning it with the carpet scrubber full of stain and pet odor remover. It wasn’t strong enough, so I bought enzyme scent sprays for pets at the pet store. I also tried white vinegar and tried essential oils.

No matter what I used it just got rid of the cat pee smell for a few days and then I could smell cat pee again. I spent way too much money on this thing! I was completely convinced that only the strongest, most powerful, specially made formulas would work.
I soon discovered that I had the solution in the cupboard all along… and it wasn’t some chemical laden crap from the pet store!
Peroxide, baking soda and dish soap. Sound familiar? These are the 3 ingredients in my best skunk spray remover! recipe The ratios are a little different, but it works just as well for getting rid of cat urine smell as it does for skunk spray.
It’s so much more natural than all the artificial chemicals I’ve been spraying around my house, plus it works better than all the other sprays and cleaners I’ve bought!
How To Remove Cat Urine Smell (with Pictures)
To clean up fresh cat urine: Dry the wet area with paper towels until it can no longer absorb moisture. The more you can pee at first, the easier it will be to get rid of the smell. Spray with solution until saturated. Let it sit until it dries.
To clean the smell of old cat urine If the cat pee stain is already dry when you find it, skip the drying and start spraying the solution on the urine area. You’ll have to saturate the place to make sure you get it all.
In one particularly smelly spot, I sprayed it once with the solution, then wiped it with paper towels. Spray the solution again and then allow this application of the solution to dry naturally.
The best part about this solution is that it still removes the smell of cat urine, even if you have already used something else in place of the urine.
How To Get Pee Smell Out Of Carpets, Mattresses, And Furniture—without Harsh Chemicals
Many commercial pet urine removal products say they won’t work on stains that are old or have been treated with other detergents. I have used this solution to treat stains that were previously treated with 3 different commercial solutions and it worked perfectly every time.
Now on to the hard part…finding exactly where the cat sprayed. I went to Walmart and bought a black light LED flashlight. It was under $10. Cat urine glows in the black light! No store near you? Check out this portable black light on Amazon.
A puddle of cat pee will look neon orange. A stain on fabric or carpet will look more like a bright white spot. It will glow so you know when you see it. Sometimes it’s helpful to vacuum the area first to remove lint or glow-on-black light spots.
I used this solution on everything…carpet, sofa, pet bed and even a pair of boots and it left no stains or discoloration. However, I recommend a patch test if it’s a particularly important surface you’re cleaning.
How To Remove Cat Urine Odor From Clothes & Bedding
I haven’t tried this on dog urine stains, but I have no reason to think it wouldn’t work to remove any kind of pet odor. If you try it, let me know!
The only downside I found is that if you don’t use the whole solution right away and try to use it for a few days, it doesn’t seem to work as well. So mix it fresh every time you need it. However, with supplies under $1, it’s cheap to mix whenever you need to.
This pet house odor eliminator really helped get rid of pet odor…which is great because my youngest son wants to keep this kitty.
