How To Get Rid Of Dry Spots On Your Face – Dry skin can be caused by a number of factors. This can lead to itching, irritation, stiffness, cracked skin, and possibly even bleeding. Fortunately, there are many dermatologist and science approved home remedies to combat dry skin.
The most common brand name for petroleum jelly is Vaseline. It is an effective moisturizer with no irritants or fragrances, making it safe for sensitive skin. In fact, Harry Dao, MD, chair of dermatology at Loma Linda University Health, says the brand name Vaseline is one of his favorite products to recommend to people who suffer from dry skin.

Petroleum jelly is a blend of safe mineral oils and waxes, without ingredients that can aggravate dry skin or eczema. It is very effective in creating a protective barrier for the skin. “Just as a river bed cracks when water evaporates too quickly, the skin can crack and become extremely dry if its barrier is compromised,” says Dao.

A 2016 study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology proved that petroleum jelly reduces the amount of moisture that evaporates from the skin by 98%.
Dao says the best time to apply petroleum jelly is right after you bathe, as it is very effective at locking in moisture as it acts as a barrier for the skin to prevent water loss through evaporation.
According to Michele Farber, MD, dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, oatmeal baths are a great way to soothe irritated skin.
A 2015 study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology showed that colloidal oatmeal (basically ground oats) is effective in reducing skin dryness, roughness and itching. That’s because oatmeal helps repair the skin’s barrier, is anti-inflammatory and has antioxidant properties, according to Farber.

Coconut oil, especially virgin coconut oil (meaning mechanically extracted from the coconut, no chemicals added) is effective at locking in moisture. It can also create a protective barrier to prevent moisture from evaporating from the skin, according to a 2014 study.
In addition, coconut oil also has antibacterial properties. It’s great for preventing infections, as extra dry skin can get cracks or cuts that can become infected. It’s especially helpful for people whose dry skin can lead to a painful skin condition called eczema, according to a 2008 study.
You can apply coconut oil after bathing to lock in moisture. But Farber also recommends applying the oil before you shower to prevent moisture loss while swimming. But if you have facial or body acne, do not use coconut oil on those areas as it can make the acne worse. Additionally, Dao says to be careful if you have extra sensitive skin, as you may be allergic to natural coconut fragrances. Pay attention to the label of the product you buy and make sure they don’t add any extra flavorings.
If petroleum jelly or coconut oil is too greasy for your taste, jump for a scented lotion, Farber says to choose a cream or ointment that has a thicker consistency, as it will usually keep you moisturized effectively for longer.

Dao says he likes to recommend creams that contain ceramides, which are lipids that help the skin lock in moisture. One option here is the Cerave brand, and Dao recommends the Cerave Moisturizing Cream which is free from common irritants and fragrances, so it’s great for people with sensitive skin.
In general, look for fragrance-free, unscented products. Listen to your body too. Just because something is supposed to be fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin, it can irritate your dry skin. In this case, ask your dermatologist what might suit you better.
If you take long hot showers every day, you strip your skin of its natural moisture. According to Farber, hot showers and baths are a big culprit for dry skin. She recommends sticking to shorter, lukewarm showers, around 98.6º Fahrenheit. Water above 105º can be irritating and dehydrating.
She also says to apply your moisturizer of choice as soon as you get out of the shower. Or, as mentioned earlier, you can even try applying coconut oil before you get in the shower.

Also, avoid scented soaps when bathing. Farber says soaps with sulfates or harsh surfactants will disrupt the skin’s barrier and cause it to lose moisture, so be sure to check the ingredient list before buying and using a body soap.
If you’ve tried these home remedies and still have dry, itchy, painful skin, Dao recommends seeing a dermatologist to make sure there isn’t something more serious going on. Dry skin that won’t go away can be a sign of more serious skin conditions or internal health conditions. A white circle with a black border around a rising chevron. The change of seasons can wreak havoc on acne-prone skin, and winter is no different. If you’re struggling with dryness on top of acne this season, these dermatologists have the answers for you.
How To Get Rid Of Rough Patches On Knees And Elbows
Dry skin can lead to acne if you don’t use the right skin care routine, says Diane Berson, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice in New York City and a faculty member in the department of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College. .
Your detergent may be too harsh for the winter. If you are acne-prone, your skin can benefit from stronger cleansers during the summer to combat sweat and oil, says Berson. But when winter sets in, the impact of the cold air outside and the dry heat inside can be too much for your skin to bear – resulting in dry, flaky and inflamed skin.
On top of that drought falling out, you might think that increased oil production is to blame. But that’s a myth, says Berson. “When you dry out the skin, your oil glands don’t necessarily work harder to lubricate the skin,” she says. The production of sebum, the oil produced by our sebaceous (oil) glands, is caused by hormones, stress, diet and genetics – not your skin’s moisture level.
Harsh cleansers can disrupt your skin’s barrier function, the complex set of mechanisms that allow our skin to retain moisture and keep germs out. This can cause inflammation of the sebum follicles, aka your pores, which then leads to acne.
How To Get Rid Of Dry Skin: 7 Expert Tips For Winter Skin Care
Your moisturizer is too heavy and clogs your skin. Winter weather can make you want to reach for heavier moisturizers, says Berson, but those heavier products can be a no-brainer for oily skin, even in the winter dryness.
“As a result of using a heavier moisturizer to combat the dryness of the skin, they may find that they are more prone to congestion and breakouts,” says Berson.
Since your skin care routine can be the root cause of your acne and dry skin, it’s important to choose the right products.
Which cleanser to choose: You need to make sure you’re using a gentle cleanser, says Sonya Kenkare, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Rush Medical College in Chicago. Kenkare recommends a hydrating cleanser from drugstore brands like CeraVe and Cetaphil.

Avoid foaming cleansers, she says, because they have more detergent that can cause more dryness. Aim to clean and moisturize your skin twice a day. And make sure you get a cleanser with the right ingredients for your skin type.
Which moisturizer to choose: Choose a moisturizer that is oil-free and noncomedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores, says Kenkare. Timing is also important. You must moisturize while your skin is still moist, says Berson, and when you dry out, pat gently, do not rub.
“You’re really going to help seal in the moisture and make the skin feel better hydrated. If you just dry out and walk out, every time you do that, you’re drying your skin out more because the moisture evaporates from the skin. and it takes more fight together,” says Berson.
Add a serum: If an oil-free moisturizer isn’t cutting it, Berson has another recommendation: “When I have patients who need hydration, but
