How To Get Urine Smell Out Of Clothes
Whether you’re babysitting an elderly relative, have a house full of stomach issues, or babysitting a baby, each of these activities will create the stains and odors that come with “these” types of accidents.
Smart & Easy Ways To Get Rid Of Urine Smell
Getting rid of odors and stains can be difficult, so read on so you don’t have to throw things away or live with very foul odors!
Well, urine contains proteins and when exposed to heat, it cures stains and odors produced by the proteins. If you soak in hot water, it will set the stains. Remember the warning your mom gave you when she taught you to do laundry, don’t put anything stained in the washer/dryer if it hasn’t fallen out in the wash cycle.
One way to combat urine stains is to use baking soda. Before washing, soak your clothes or bedding in a sink or tub full of cold water and baking soda. Then rinse off any residue with cold water. Then you can wash as usual. When the urine is completely gone, warm water is enough to wash.
You can also use enzymes for washing. Either detergent with enzymes or pre-treatment solution with enzymes. Enzymes break down proteins.

If baking soda alone doesn’t work well, try a solution of baking soda, white vinegar, and water. Soak baking soda or put it in a spray bottle and spray the stained area. Leave on for at least an hour, then rinse with cold water and wash as usual. All you need is a vinegar and water solution, 2 parts vinegar to 1 part water.
Even copious amounts of borax and baking soda work well. Soak, rinse with cold water and wash as usual.
Whatever you use, do a sniff test before drying. If necessary, wipe off the product again. Drying on a line outside in the sun is also a good way to get rid of any remaining fumes.
The first thing you MUST do before washing is to make sure that all the faeces have been rinsed off your clothes or bedding.

As with urine, rinse it thoroughly with cold water to remove it. Once the item is free of feces, you can deal with the stain and odor. Here are some ways.
Dishwashing liquid, vinegar, and water: Take one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, such as Dawn, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of lukewarm water. Soak the item for at least 15 minutes, then use a clean, white cloth to dry it until the liquid is absorbed.

Like urine, feces are full of protein, so an enzyme stain remover will also be a good solution for stains and odors. Check the instructions on the stain remover bottle, but an easy soak is about 2 tablespoons of treatment enzyme to a gallon of water, or about ½ cup in a tub filled with a few inches of cold water. The latter is good if you have multiple items that need to be healed at once.
After removing the stains and rinsing the items thoroughly, wash as usual. It may be advisable to use bleach in the wash cycle, and if things cannot be bleached, try white vinegar or Oxi-Clean with detergent.
As with urine stains, drying the cord in the sun is a great way to disinfect and deodorize soiled clothing or bedding.
Another tip is to avoid “free and clean” detergents. They often contain bleaching agents that leave a residue that may not cause odor problems but can cause leakage problems as the residue repels the dye.

We recently moved into an apartment while building a new home. And the water here smells, for lack of a better word, Funky. In the kitchen this is not a problem as we filter it for drinking and cooking. And you don’t really notice it in the bathroom. But our laundry smells like funky mold. To make matters worse, I have a hard time forgetting to do laundry. I leave loads in the washing machine for hours (um, days) and it only makes Funky laundry smell stronger.
Squeezing in this tiny apartment means the smell of funk is everywhere. He pats you on the back in the morning. He punches you in the face as you walk through the front door.
I needed a way to get over Funky’s musty mold smell quickly, but without using anything that would trigger my daughter’s really aggressive eczema.

How to remove odors from clothes that stink after washing Method 1: Remove odors from clothes with vinegar
Most natural remedies focused on vinegar, like this one from Meaningful Mama and another from Living on a Dime.
I already use vinegar for most of my household stuff. And I used vinegar to wash off the mildew smell from the previous wash – forgot. But it just wasn’t enough
First I tried vinegar with washing up liquid. I’ve used dish soap in my laundry to remove biological stains – like oil, grease or baby food – and it works great. But it didn’t seem right to Funk.

Then I tried vinegar and OxiClean. Again, no real improvement here either. However, I was able to bleach a few spots on my husband’s T-shirts. Sigh.
Since I put the bleach back into the mix, it worked, although the dish soap added a “bonus” of blue stains to my whites. However, I can’t use this formula on anything other than my white clothes.
There doesn’t seem to be a good answer here. And it made a (very small) difference to put the laundry directly in the dryer, which we know is a herculean task for me. Funk was still around our house.
It got so bad that I sprayed our clean laundry with our all natural bug spray. This is a family recipe with water and a combination of essential oils: lemon, lime, orange, citronella and lavender. We love the smell of the bug spray and it is phenomenal at repelling bugs.
How To Get Rid Of That Musty Smell
After a recent bout of food poisoning with our kids, I needed a deFUNKifier spray for their mattresses and bedroom. I took our bug spray and swapped the citronella for grapefruit. It worked and smelled great.
I closed it and shook it to connect. I may or may not have done some conga lines with my kids, shaking and singing “Shake, shake, shake Senora.”
Then I added a quarter cup to the sink. Okay, let’s be honest, I didn’t measure. So I added “splash” to both the bleach dispenser and the fabric softener dispenser in my washing machine. I asked the machine to soak and rinse extra and pushed to start.
From Funk. Good to go! I definitely did a happy dance when I took the laundry out of the washing machine!
Ways To Get The Musty Smell Out Of Clothes And Towels
Now, every time I do a load I add a drop or two to each chamber – of course after shaking it up a bit to reconnect. I call it my Laundry DeFUNKifier. And it’s fantastic.
Remember to make sure you are up to date with changing the amount of laundry and putting it in the dryer. Moldy clothes and musty towels can quickly appear if they are left in the washing machine for too long after rinsing
