It will still take years and decades to fully break free. Many times, being controlled by a narcissist is something you never expected, never realized would happen, and believe me, you cannot control it in any way. Narcissists want what narcissists want.
We all have narcissistic traits, especially teenagers, because they are very vulnerable to development. Far fewer are narcissists and have been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder.
1 in 200 people is diagnosed with NPD, but that doesn’t mean it’s only 1 in 200 because narcissists often don’t realize they’re the source of the problem. As therapy continues and the therapist learns a little about the person, the narcissist usually stops therapy. If you are in therapy again after many years, but usually not with the same therapist.
If you’re dealing with a narcissist, it’s almost impossible to change them because they don’t recognize or acknowledge their problems. Instead, they prefer to blame it on you. Don’t take it personally, they shouldn’t be responsible for their drama and life choices. They’re just playing their little victim card in an attempt to get you back into the relationship.
How To Tell If Someone Is An Episodic Narcissist
Every country has lifelines for victims of mental and physical abuse. If you feel like you’ve fallen into the hands of a narcissist, give them a call (usually toll-free) and they’ll usually steer you away from the toxic environment or give you more clarity on your situation. Sometimes a narcissist sees things that aren’t there, making you feel like a “lunatic who sees things that aren’t there.” Writing about a situation without any bias or prejudice can be very helpful in describing the person on the other end.
