We wish to recognize the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the land where we live and work, and to pay our respects to elders past and present. family or concerns about politics, we all feel sad, stressed and anxious at times. But what if these feelings are not here and there? According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people worldwide have depression, a condition that, far from being a normal and temporary response to life’s problems, can be a serious, debilitating health problem. Chronic stress can also negatively affect every system in your body and can even lead to diseases like heart disease. (For more on the effects of chronic stress, see my post here.) And while anxiety is a normal response to stress, it can interfere with daily life when it becomes overwhelming. Anxiety disorders are so common that the National Institute of Mental Health reports that up to 18 percent of adults in the United States have them. How do you know if you are one of the millions of people with a mental health problem? If you want to test yourself for depression/anxiety/depression, here are 5 ideas to help you self-diagnose.
You probably already know that depressed people sometimes struggle to get out of bed, but insomnia is also a common symptom of depression, chronic stress, and anxiety. Pay attention to your sleep habits. Waking up frequently in the morning or having trouble falling asleep at night is completely normal, but excessive sleep or insomnia can be a symptom of a serious mental health problem. If you have a Fitbit or other fitness tracker that automatically records your sleep duration and quality, taking a closer look at your numbers can help you spot unusual and unhealthy patterns.
It’s great to enjoy a cold beer after a hard day, but how often do you pour yourself a drink to take the edge off? Many people with emotional problems use alcohol to self-medicate. A study published in the November 2006 issue of the Journal of Neurological and Mental Disorders found that about 22% of participants with anxiety disorders self-medicated with alcohol or other drugs, and men were more likely to do so than women. Think about your drinking over the past few months. You always gravitate to the bottle (or another mind-altering substance) when you’re stressed or upset. Using alcohol to deal with unpleasant feelings may be a sign that you are self-medicating an emotional problem.
It is not uncommon for people struggling with depression to become withdrawn or lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Do you play on the weekends instead of going out to dinner, golfing, or watching a movie? Do you avoid calling family and friends? You may drop out due to depression or some other illness. On the other hand, a jammed social schedule can mean a fear of being alone and a lot of time to think. If you’re constantly interacting with people in an attempt to avoid difficult thoughts, you may be hiding from mental health issues.
