How it works? You might be wondering how it works? What is the science behind this fantastic experiment? Baking soda and vinegar react to create CO2. You can actually see the CO2 if you look closely at the flask. These are small bubbles that have joined the vinegar. When the CO2 surrounds the vinegar, it makes it lighter than the oil and lifts it to the top of the jar, but since the CO2 is a gas, it also tries to escape. As the CO2 escapes, the vinegar falls, creating this beautiful movement in the jar. How cool is that! Both ways to make a homemade lava lamp use oil and water. One uses Alka-Seltzer while the other uses salt to move the lava.
Have you ever wanted to make a homemade lava lamp? The lava lamps you buy use toxic chemicals and high heat, but you can make a lava lamp at home using safe kitchen ingredients. Here are two simple ways to make a homemade lava lamp.
This project results in a non-toxic lava lamp that is safe for children to make and use. The size of the bottle doesn’t really matter, so just use what you have available.
Oil has a lower density than water, so it usually floats on top of water. Food coloring dissolves in water, so it colors the water. However, you can use an oil-based dye if you want the oil to have color. As the seltzer bar dissolves, it releases carbon dioxide bubbles. This is because Alka-Seltzer contains citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). These two chemicals react like baking soda and vinegar and produce bubbles. These bubbles mix the layers of oil and water. The lava effect comes from immiscible fluids separating and returning to their original layers.

You can make a homemade lava lamp without Alka-Seltzer. This version of the project also uses much less oil, making it more economical.
The homemade lava lamp that uses salt works because the oil is less dense than water and floats on top. Salt is denser than oil or water, so it sinks when you add it to the glass. Oil spots stick to the salt and sink with it. As the salt dissolves, the globules stick and slowly return to the top of the glass. Lava lamps are essentially filled with heated wax that floats to the top of a salt solution, cools and contracts, and sinks back. Different sizes of wax pieces mean they have different densities, which means they have different buoyancy. This is what drives the periodic motion of the wax. You can build your own lava lamp which is easy to maintain using rubbing alcohol and mineral oil. Like salt water and wax, they also have a similar density and do not dissolve over time.
Choose a bottle before choosing a support, the aluminum pot, where to place it. A tall, slim, clear glass bottle with a screw cap works best. Using a tall, slender bottle will help maintain a wide temperature difference between the heated bottom portion of the lamp and the top, where the mineral oil will cool and contract. A wine jug will also work, although it is a bit wide for efficient heat dissipation.
Use the tool to cut a square hole in the bottom of a thin-walled aluminum pot, small enough that the bottle cannot fall through. A square will prevent the bottle from tipping over and is easier to cut than a circular hole.
Make A Groovy Lava Lamp
Cut a small triangular notch in the lip of the pot, large enough to accommodate the plug wire. The notch will allow the upside down pot to lie flat and make the lamp more stable.
Plug a manual dimmer into an electrical wall outlet. Connect the light wire to the dimmer. Screw the bulb into the socket of the cable. Do not turn on the light yet. Place the bulb under the pot upside down, with the wire going through the notch you made in step 3.
Pour mineral oil into the bottle until it is one-eighth full. Add enough 90% alcohol to fill the bottle three-quarters full. Adding the alcohol will stir the mineral oil, so let the oil sit for two to three hours. Once the oil has settled, turn on the light bulb for an hour to warm the mineral oil before moving on to the next step.
Add 70 percent rubbing alcohol in small amounts, waiting 10 minutes between additions to allow the concentration to equalize. Continue to add 70 percent alcohol until the oil begins to rise.

Add small amounts of distilled water at 10 minute intervals. Make sure there is an inch or two of air space at the top or the oil may not expand enough to float. Dip a straw in a glass of water, put a finger on top of the straw so that the water stays on the straw, and each time pour about half of the water from the straw into the lamp. Stop adding water when some of the mineral oil rises to the top. The densities of the liquids are now properly balanced and you can screw the cap back on the bottle.
If the mineral oil forms a dome but never rises, there may not be enough air space in the bottle for the oil to expand. Remove some of the liquid with a turkey baster to make a larger air pocket. If this does not work, the bottle may heat up too quickly. Lower the regulator switch and try again, starting at step 5.

I got the idea for this project when I was talking to my science teacher for science fair project ideas. I wasn’t working with anyone else and my plans changed when I threw in the ingredients too quickly and had to start over. It was a disappointing mishap that I had to improvise/fix, but it ended up turning out much better the second time around and was a good learning experience.

I worked on it at home but did some research at school. This project connected to other parts of my life because we learned about convection currents in science and it helped me understand the concept better and get an A on this chapter.
My biggest problem was that I threw in the ingredients too quickly on my first try. Then I had to figure out what I did wrong and why the solution got so foggy. I finally solved the problem and figured it out. I’m definitely very proud of the lava bubbles getting so big and moving like that! I was so excited that I could actually do it and achieve my goal. I think it was a good life lesson to learn is to fail and then bounce back and succeed! It felt great. If I were to do it again, I certainly wouldn’t pour so quickly that my first attempt was correct. I would also have added more than 70% at the beginning so I wouldn’t have to do it again at the end to balance the density mix in the formula.
Please know that this project will not be cheap and it is also sometimes trial and error and you have to be patient. It was a great learning experience and I’m sure it will be for you too. I will teach you how to make one
