How To Sharpen A Picture In Photoshop – In this tutorial, I will show you how to enhance a blurred image in Photoshop in a few simple steps. All these steps can be saved as actions so you can get the same effect faster in the future!
Before I show you how to blur an image in Photoshop, there’s one thing you should know: sharpening is about improving details, not creating them out of thin air. So if your entire photo is as blurry as the back of the head and neck in this image, this method won’t work. However, if it’s a little out of focus, like the face here, it will be perfect for you!
How To Sharpen A Picture In Photoshop
Now I will show you how to sharpen a photo in Photoshop. Open your image. Open the Actions panel and create a new action.
Intro To Photoshop
Duplicate the background layer by pressing Control-J and hide the new layer; this copy will allow us to compare versions quickly.
Go back to the back layer and duplicate it again. Right-click and select Convert to Smart Object. This will allow you to adjust filters after adding them. Name this layer
Go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. This filter adds a sharpening effect by increasing the contrast of the edges. Drag the sliders until the edges start to glow, then zoom out to find the perfect spot.
Since sharpening also increases noise, use the Reduce Noise slider to make this effect less noticeable.
The Best Way To Sharpen Your Photos
You can pause the action now and compare your current result with the original. It’s already significantly sharp, but we can make it even better! Continue recording and duplicating
Change the Blend Mode of this layer to Overlay. The colors will appear burnt, but this is temporary.
Go to Filter > Other > High Pass. Adjust the Radius to see just a subtle white line, with no other colors.
If you compare the results now, the difference is quite impressive! But we can do one more thing. Duplicate this layer again and increase the High Pass, exaggerating the effect a bit. Name this layer

Duplicate this layer again and increase the High Pass even more – focus on the blurred areas and try to sharpen them that way. Name this layer
Add a layer mask to these two layers and fill them with black using the Paint Bucket Tool (G). This will make those layers invisible.
Stop recording. This is the end of the automatic step, and the rest must be done manually. First select the layer mask
Layer and take a soft round brush. Paint the areas you want to sharpen even more with white, revealing parts of the invisible layer.

Now adjust the pre-relaxed filters’ sliders to make the effect stronger or more subtle. You can also change the opacity to make the effect weaker quickly, or duplicate a layer to make it stronger. There is no single perfect method of how to add sharpening in Photoshop; you can experiment to create the effect you prefer.
Test your final result at different zoom levels; If you need your image to look good at its highest resolution, you can do something else. Select the top layer and press Control-Shift-Alt-E to create a blended layer. Then go to Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise. Experiment with these settings: try to find a balance between blurry noise and loss of detail.
Layer to the current layer, then invert it with Control-I; this will exclude the most important details of this effect.
This basic sharpening isn’t the only way to improve the look of a photo! Here are some Photoshop actions that enhance the look of your photos to create stunning results.
