The good news is that you don’t have to get your hands dirty in the cup. You can judge the color by simply looking into the toilet after urinating. (Don’t worry if the color is a little diluted with toilet water. It’s still a very useful indicator.)

You’ve probably seen the color change daily, often hourly. So, what is health and what should you do? We’ve put together this handy urine color chart to keep you wondering.
Are You Hydrated?
It is important to drink enough water every day, but it is possible to overdo it. If your urine is completely clear and has no yellow color, you are probably drinking more than the recommended amount of water.
Also, if writing has become your full-time job, that’s another sign that you’re filling up too much. For the average adult, 4 to 10 trips to urinate in a 24-hour period is considered normal.
The reason you want to avoid overhydration is because too much water depletes the electrolytes in your body. Although rare, it can cause dehydration.
But most of us don’t need to worry about that much water. In general, if you are overhydrating, limit yourself to less water until your urine turns yellow.
Ways To Tell If You Are Dehydrated
Urine that is lemon to pale beer in color means you are hydrated. We like to focus on this area of the urine spectrum #ourgoals. (That’s right, brag about it!)
Drinking water is the most obvious way to stay hydrated. But did you know that eating fruits and vegetables is also a great source of water?
If your urine looks amber or dark yellow, it’s probably time to drink some water. Although this part of the spectrum does not represent a dangerous level of dehydration, it can be tilted in that direction.
When your body loses more water than it takes in, it starts holding on to the water you have. With less water to dilute, the natural minerals and chemicals in your urine become more concentrated and have a deeper color.
Weird Signs Of Dehydration
If your urine is any shade of brown or dark orange, it’s time to pay attention because you may be too thin.
Vomiting, diarrhea, and fever cause the body to lose water rapidly and are common causes of dehydration. Fortunately, most healthy adults can easily rehydrate by drinking plenty of fluids and electrolytes.
Remember that while bottled and tap water are low in electrolytes, you may need something with a higher concentration, such as Gatorade or a homemade tonic, to restore your body’s electrolyte balance.
For children who experience dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea, the Mayo Clinic recommends treatment with oral rehydration medications such as Pedialyte.

However, experts stress that if your urine is very dark or orange in color, make an appointment sooner rather than later, as liver failure can cause this.
Current daily recommendations are about 9 cups for women and 13 for men. But remember, this is just a general guide.
Factors such as age, whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, hot weather and your level of physical activity all affect how much water is healthy for you.
Signs & Symptoms Of Dehydration
If you wait to drink until you’re thirsty, you might miss out. Having a reusable water bottle on hand is a great way to make sure you’re getting enough water. You can remind yourself to drink between tasks or at other times, such as during a commercial break or a new episode. If you’re in a very hot or dry location, or you’re breastfeeding or doing a lot of physical activity, be sure to compress a little more.
