At Growing Kids Learning Center of Northern Indiana, we understand the importance of practicing these types of things when children are young. As your child grows, they will learn skills that they will practice throughout their adult lives, including their own well-being skills. In this blog we will share some tips that can help you teach your child about self-care. Read on to learn more and start practicing together!
Self Care, Personal Development And Wellness For Beginners
Start by teaching your child the basic skills to follow to stay healthy. From personal hygiene to diet, you can start teaching these things at a young age. If you feed your children healthy meals, bathe them, and help them brush their teeth, you’re helping them build a foundation for self-care as they grow. These are things your child will eventually learn how to do, and if you work with them first, you can help them develop healthy habits. While these may not seem like big self-care habits, they are the most important things and they show your child that you need to take care of yourself to keep yourself healthy.
These days, children often lose sight of their favorite TV shows, play video games, or spend too much time on the screen. Although technology is a big part of your child’s future and life, you should also encourage them to nurture and leave the TV or tablet for a while. Buy toys that make your child think, allow him to practice imaginative play or work on some craft. All these can help them develop different skills and allow them to work with their minds. Take it a step further and ask them to do yoga or something else that helps them get in touch with you. This is a great way to help them gain insight and understanding.
A large part of self-care is related to mental and emotional health. While talking about emotions with your baby will be different than talking about emotions with teenagers, it’s a great way to help them develop the right skills to identify and manage their emotions. When your child is stressed or sad, help them talk about their feelings and find ways to manage them. Many adults don’t know how to control their emotions and don’t know how to properly identify them, which can lead to problems of their own. By helping your child better understand their feelings, they can understand how to deal with them, even as adults. It’s a great way to practice self-care and relate to their emotions.
Exercise is a great self-care habit that is easy to teach your child. While it’s unlikely you’ll be taking your child to the gym and teaching them how to lift weights, there are many ways you can encourage an active lifestyle. Play soccer or basketball with them, take them to the amusement park, bike rides, long walks, yoga, to-do lists. When you lead an active lifestyle, you are more likely to be mentally, physically and emotionally healthy. Help your child learn that being active can help him feel hopeless and relaxed. They will carry it into their future.

Don’t teach your children that free time is bad. Sometimes the best self-care practice is to do nothing. Especially in the fast-paced lives we live as adults, sometimes all we need is a break from it all to do it all. Give your child some free time, whether that means cuddling them on the sofa for a few minutes, reading to them, or sitting outside and watching them float away with the clouds. Teaching your child that it’s okay to have some free time can help them slow down their busy lives as they grow into adulthood.
Spending time with loved ones is a great self-care activity not only for adults, but for children too! Make it a habit to spend quality time with your child every week and enjoy things. Grab some ice cream, play crazy games or do other fun activities. Not only can this serve as a self-care practice, but it can also help you get closer to your child!
Spending time outside can help keep you and your baby fresh and is another great self-care exercise. Spend time outside with your kids whenever you can. Enjoy outdoor adventures that allow them to explore and enjoy their time outside. By making the outdoors an integral part of your family life, you can help your child develop a love for it and use it as a self-care strategy as they grow.
There are so many ways to teach and practice self-care with your child! By teaching your child self-care at a young age, you can help them develop these vital habits as they grow up and into adulthood.

I’m not asking you to exercise for an hour every day or lose weight and build muscle. No, let me move your body.
Even parking away from the store is a form of movement in which you need to walk.
Our bodies are not meant to sit still for hours on end. So set an alarm every hour or every hour and walk around for a few minutes.
Finally you can work up to a workout session. However, any type of movement is better than none.
Ways To Integrate Self Care Into Your Daily Routine
Food is as important as movement. You have to eat to live, this is the reality of life.
I never say calorie restriction or donuts. Eat that! Enjoy them. Your soul deserves those things, just like your body craves salad.
But don’t forget this salad. be sure
