A first edition of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” with many errors and signed by the author, is expected to fetch at least $250,000.

Rare Proof Sheets Of First Harry Potter Book Expected To Sell For £20,000

The publication was one of 500 hardback copies of the book printed in the first run in 1997. Three hundred of those were sent to libraries.

The Christie’s sale, as part of the upcoming “The Art of Literature: Loan and Selling Exhibition,” is among 200 others.

“There are some things that seem like they got the book wrong,” Mark Wiltshire, a specialist in printed books and cocurator of “The Art of Literature” exhibition, told Reuters.

“On the back cover, for example, philosophers, which is of course a keyword … misspelled ‘philosphers’, that ‘o’ that second ‘o’ is missing. Also on page 53, in the list of things that The students are asked to take to Hogwarts with them, ‘a wand’ is repeated twice.”

While Rowling was still unknown at the time, the book about the magical world of witches and wizards became a huge hit around the world, spawning an entire series and a huge film franchise.

“In many ways, this book is the physical manifestation of a magical memory for many people and that’s what makes it so desirable,” Wiltshire said.

First Edition Of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone Bidded For 117 Thousand Euros

First released in 1998, in an initial run of about 500 copies, and eventually sold over 120 million copies worldwide.

The first edition of the book is an interesting historical record compared to the size of the global franchise it will develop. It contains several typos including one on its back cover where “Philosopher’s” is misspelled as “Philospher’s,” and another where an equipment list includes a repeated line. It was an inauspicious start to what would become one of the best-selling books of all time.

Although not exclusive to the first edition of the book, this copy has a unique back cover illustration of a wizard not found in any of the Harry Potter books. Later the illustrator decided to invent a character based on his father instead of portraying one of the magicians depicted in the book. The portrait was later replaced with a portrait of Albus Dumbledore.

Unfortunately, if you also have a first edition copy of the book, it may not be as valuable as this copy, signed by J.K. Rowling herself in 2003 before selling it at a charity auction.

First Edition Of ‘harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone’ By J.k. Rowling Could Realize £60,000

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly claimed that the book’s illustrator, Thomas Taylor, did not read the book before drawing its cover. This is not correct. We have updated the article to reflect this. The ‘unique insight into what has become an iconic work’ is the only known surviving copy of its kind and will be auctioned alongside a first edition signed by Rowling.

A prepublication version of JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book is expected to fetch at least £20,000 when it goes up for auction this week. The galley proof (a publishing term for the printed version of a book before the final proofread) is the only known surviving copy of its type. A first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone signed by Rowling is also up for auction and is expected to sell for at least £25,000.

The set of galley sheets, to be sold at Chiswick Auctions, consists of 109 sheets. An advanced copy of Philosopher’s Stone includes correspondence from 1997, the year of the book’s publication, which features correspondence between Rosamund Walker, then marketing manager of Bloomsbury Children’s Books (now Rosamund de la Hey, co- owner of independent bookshop The Mainstreet Trading Company), and children’s book reviewer Fiona Waters.

The lot, which will form part of the auction house’s Fine Books & Works on Paper sale on April 28, is estimated at £20,000-£30,000.

Dated February 26, 1997, the letter from Walker accompanying the galley sheets – billed as the final version of the book – describes the plot of the book, with Walker writing: “The story then becomes a good which is a knockabout story of school capers. with good guys and baddies … I just love it – pacy, funny, imaginative, smart and the characters are very vivid.”

Waters also said the Bloomsbury team would have to fix the book jacket “when they get it”, and asked for a finished copy because “he wants to tell more people about it”. Waters’ quote was used on the back of the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Clive Moss, head of Chiswick Auctions printed books and manuscripts said: “We are delighted to be able to offer a fascinating insight into what has become an iconic work of literary history. This copy is not mentioned in Philip W Errington’s definitive bibliography, which records all the activities of JK Rowling’s works. It is therefore the only known surviving set of galley sheets to have been found, or offered for sale on the open market.

Also up for auction is a signed first edition paperback of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Harry Potter specialist Adam Houston. The book is estimated to fetch between £25,000 and £28,000.

A set of first editions of all seven UK Harry Potter titles will also be sold at the auction house, all signed on the title page by Rowling and in excellent condition. The set was accompanied by a note on paper headed by Rowling explaining that this signed set was donated by Rowling to be used for a fundraising auction in aid of the charity BSF. The set is estimated to sell for between £26,000 and £28,000.

The lots were donated by different people for “different reasons”, Moss said. “Some realize that they hold something valuable, others feel that the market for them is right, one wants it to help buy property. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels are a phenomenon that continues to give and helping people in many ways”.

Also part of the sale is a complete set of first edition James Bond novels by Ian Fleming, estimated to fetch between £40,000 and £60,000. Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter for all the latest entertainment news and reviews.
